One person, one bench, one wallet at a time
nivisto is me — Nick — and a bench in Rockdale, in Sydney’s south.
There’s no production line here and no staff. When you order a wallet, I cut it, stitch it and finish it myself, then put it in the post. The wallet you receive did not exist before you asked for it.
Why kangaroo leather
Most leather goods are made from cowhide. I use full-grain veg-tan kangaroo, and I keep coming back to it for one reason: it’s the strongest leather for its weight that you can buy.
Kangaroo hide has a tighter, more uniform fibre structure than cattle hide. It doesn’t need to be split down to be workable, so it keeps its full grain — the dense outer surface where all the strength lives. That means I can build a wallet that’s genuinely thin without it being flimsy. A kangaroo bifold sits flatter in your pocket than a cowhide one of the same strength, and it wears in rather than wearing out.
Veg-tan means it’s tanned with tree bark tannins rather than chromium salts. It takes longer, it costs more, and it’s why the leather darkens and develops a patina instead of just getting scuffed.
How it’s made
Cut by hand. Every panel is cut individually from the hide, working around the natural marks and grain variation.
Saddle stitched by hand. Two needles, one thread, every stitch locked. It’s slower than a machine — significantly slower — but a machine lockstitch unravels from a single broken stitch and a saddle stitch doesn’t. If one stitch fails, the rest hold.
Edges burnished and sealed with beeswax. The edges are sanded, slicked and finished by hand until they’re smooth and closed. This is the part that takes the longest and it’s the first thing that gives a cheap wallet away.
Made to order, in your colours. Fourteen kangaroo leather colours, twelve thread colours, and optional personalisation. You’re not choosing from stock — you’re specifying a piece.
The names
Redfern. Bondi. Annandale. Barangaroo. Woronora. Killara. Turrella.
They’re all Sydney places — the city this workshop sits in, and the places I know well enough to name something after.
What I’d rather you did
Buy one wallet that lasts fifteen years instead of five that last three.
That’s the whole idea. It’s why I use the expensive leather, why I stitch by hand, and why I’d genuinely rather repair something I made years ago than sell you a replacement.
