Leather Anniversary Gift
The third wedding anniversary is the leather one, which is where most people arrive at this page.
Everything below is hand cut and saddle-stitched here in Sydney, made to order rather than pulled off a shelf — wallets, a passport wallet, notebook covers and a braided bracelet. Most can be personalised with initials or a date stamped into the leather.
These are things that get carried every day and improve while being carried. Veg-tan leather darkens and softens with handling, so the gift looks better on the tenth anniversary than it did on the third. That is the argument for leather as a gift, and it only holds if the leather is full-grain.

Why the third anniversary is leather
The traditional anniversary list assigns a material to each year, and the third is leather. The usual explanation is that by year three a marriage has some durability to it — leather being the material that takes daily wear and gets better rather than worse.
Whether or not you find that meaningful, it makes for a practical gift year: leather goods are things people use, and a well-made one lasts decades.
Choosing something
| If they… | Look at |
|---|---|
| Carry a bulky wallet they complain about | A minimalist wallet — Bondi, Annandale, Woronora or Barangaroo |
| Want the familiar bifold, done properly | A traditional wallet — Killara, Turrella or Redfern |
| Travel, or you travel together | The passport wallet — it holds two passports |
| Write things down | A notebook or notepad cover, refillable for life |
| Would rather wear it than carry it | The braided bracelet |
The passport wallet is worth a second look for an anniversary specifically. It takes two passports side by side, which makes it a gift about the two of you rather than about them — and the initials go on the outside.
Personalising it
Initials, a name, or a date, stamped into the leather. On an anniversary gift the date is the obvious choice, and it is the thing that stops the object being interchangeable with one bought anywhere else.
Characters are stamped exactly as you type them, spaces included. It cannot be undone, so check it twice before you order.
Why it will still be around in ten years
The wallets are full-grain kangaroo — the strongest leather for its weight you can buy, which is why the material is used in motorcycle leathers and football boots. It stays thin without being flimsy.
The notebook and notepad covers are full-grain veg-tan cowhide, chosen where body and structure matter more than thinness.
Both are vegetable tanned with tree bark tannins rather than chromium salts. Slower and dearer, and the reason the leather darkens into a patina over years rather than cracking and peeling the way coated, corrected-grain leather does. A gift that visibly improves is a better gift on the tenth anniversary than it was on the third.
Everything is saddle stitched — two needles, one thread, every stitch locked, so a single broken stitch does not unravel the seam the way a machine lockstitch will.
Made in Rockdale, Sydney
One person, one bench, made to order in your choice of leather and thread colour. The wallets are named after Sydney suburbs because that is where they are made.

Common questions
How long before it arrives?
One to two weeks to make, then the post — so order with time in hand. If you are working to a date, email first and you will get an honest answer rather than an optimistic one.
Can I have a date stamped on it?
Yes. Dates and initials are the two most common requests. It goes on exactly as typed.
What if it is the wrong colour or style?
Everything is made to order, so change-of-mind returns are not offered — see Returns & Refunds. If you are unsure which one to choose, ask before ordering rather than after.
Is gift packaging included?
Pieces arrive in a gift box. If you need it sent directly to the recipient without a receipt, say so in the order notes.
What about the other anniversary years?
Leather is the third. It is also, unhelpfully for gift-buyers, one of the few on the list that produces something genuinely useful — which is why a fair number of these are bought for anniversaries well past the third.
