Leather

The leather used to make this item is a 3-4 Oz (1.4 – 1.6 mm) full grain vegetable tanned Leather made from the skin of cows. Full Grain vegetable tanned leather develops a patina during its lifetime.

Full-grain leather refers to hides that have not been sanded, buffed, or snuffed (as opposed to top-grain or corrected leather) to remove imperfections (or natural marks) on the surface of the hide. As a result of this, the grain remains which contains the fibre, strength and durability. The grain has breathability, resulting in less moisture from prolonged contact.

Vegetable-tanned leather is tanned using tannins and other ingredients found in different vegetable matter, such as tree bark prepared in bark mills, wood, leaves, fruits and roots and other similar sources. This tanning process is the most eco friendly and has been used to make leather for thousands of years. Due to this process, he leather created is supple and cream to brown in colour, with the exact shade depending on the mix of chemicals and the colour of the skin. It is the only form of leather suitable for use in leather carving or stamping.

Ounces are used to measure leather thickness. One ounce equals 1/64″ (0.4 mm) in thickness. So a weight of 7 to 8 oz. means the leather is 7/64″ (2.8 mm) to 8/64″ (3.2 mm) in thickness or approximately 1/8″ thick. The thickness of leather varies to some extent throughout the hide. Thus, leather is graded a range of thickness such as 4 to 5 oz., or 6 to 7 oz. As a comparison, a quarter (coin) is equal to a 4 oz. thickness.A standard thickness for belts is a 7 to 8 oz leather.
