The Rockdale journal cover is hand-cut and stitched from full-grain veg-tan leather, sized to take a standard journal insert. When you finish one, the cover stays and the insert gets replaced — so the object accumulates the history rather than being thrown out with it.
It can be personalised, which is worth doing on a journal more than on most things. A name or a date on the cover is what makes it a thing someone keeps rather than a thing someone owns.

Measure your journal before ordering. The number that matters is 21 × 13.5 cm — anything up to that fits. If yours is a pocket notebook rather than an A5 journal, the notebook covers are the right size instead.
Refillable, which is the point
You will fill a journal. You will not wear out this cover.
When one journal is finished, the insert is replaced and the cover carries on. Over a few years that means one object accumulating the history rather than a shelf of separate books with nothing in common. That is a different proposition from a leather-bound notebook, where the leather is thrown out with the pages.
Heavier leather than the notebook covers
This is 7–8 oz veg-tan cowhide, which is substantially thicker than what goes into a pocket notebook cover. An A5 journal is heavier and gets opened flat on a desk, so the cover needs enough body to hold its shape and protect the corners rather than flopping around the insert.
Veg-tan means tanned with tree bark tannins rather than chromium salts. It starts firm and pale and softens as it is handled, darkening into a patina. A journal cover picks that up faster than almost anything else here, because it is held rather than pocketed — expect it to look noticeably different within months.
Saddle stitched by hand with waxed thread. Edges sanded, slicked and sealed with beeswax.
The tab closure
A shaped leather tab passes through a loop on the front to hold the cover shut. No elastic to perish, no magnet to weaken, no press stud to pull through the leather — the three things that usually fail first on a journal cover.
The tab is also where personalisation goes, which is why initials on this piece sit somewhere you actually see.
Personalisation
Initials, a name or a date, stamped into the leather exactly as you type it. Worth doing on a journal more than on most things: it is a private object, and a name on the front is what makes it someone's rather than just theirs.
Check the spelling before ordering. Leather cannot be unstamped.

Cut and stitched by hand after you order, in your choice of colour. One to two weeks to make, then the post — a little longer if it is being personalised. Standard postage within Australia is free and tracked.

Will my journal fit?
If it is 21 × 13.5 cm or smaller, yes. That covers most A5 journals and Moleskine large. Measure rather than assume — sizes vary more between brands than you would expect.
Does a journal come with it?
Check the product page. Assume you are buying the cover and will supply the insert.
Can I use it for a diary?
Yes, provided the diary is within the size above. Plenty of these are bought for exactly that.
What happens when the journal is full?
Take it out, put the next one in. That is the whole design.
Will the leather mark?
Yes, and it is meant to. Full-grain veg-tan takes scratches and finger oils and turns them into a patina over time. If you want something that stays looking new, this is the wrong material.
